Why Visit
Main Tang imperial palace, larger than the Forbidden City. Today: foundations exposed, museum on site. Understanding Tang scale requires seeing this.
How to Get There
Daming Palace is in northern Xi'an, 3km north of the Bell Tower and Xi'an city wall. Metro Line 2 to Longshouyuan Station (龙首原站), Exit D -- walk 10 min south to the Danfeng Gate (south entrance). Metro Line 4 to Daming Palace West Station (大明宫西站) for the west entrance. City buses 2, 17, 22, 46, 104, 309 all stop at Daming Palace South Gate. Taxi from Bell Tower area: 20-25 CNY, 15 min. The park is enormous (3.2 sq km) -- the Danfeng Gate is the main entrance. Rent a bike (20 CNY/hour) at the south entrance if you want to cover the full site.
Where to Stay
The park area sits between the old city wall and the new northern district. Hilton Xi'an (600-700 CNY/night, 10 min walk to Daming Palace south gate, elevated views of the park, best upscale choice); Xi'an Bell Tower Hotel (300-400 CNY/night, 30 min walk or 10 min taxi, in the heart of old city); Jinjiang Inn Xi'an North Station branch (150-200 CNY/night, 2 metro stops north, clean budget). The area immediately north of the park (Fengcheng Road corridor) has newer business hotels: Atour Hotel Fengcheng 5th Road (300-350 CNY/night, stylish mid-range Chinese chain, popular with young travelers).
What to Eat
The area north of Daming Palace is a newer residential district with fewer historic restaurants. Best option: eat near the Bell Tower area before or after visiting, then take the 15-min taxi north. Near the park: Taihua Road has a small food street with noodle shops and BBQ stalls; try yang rou chuan (羊肉串, lamb skewers) from the Uyghur-style BBQ stalls. Defachang Dumpling House (德发长饺子馆) near Bell Tower -- Xi'an's most famous dumpling restaurant since 1936, serves a dumpling banquet (饺子宴, 100-200 CNY/person, 20+ types of dumplings). Bring water and snacks into the park -- there is ONE small kiosk near the Danfeng Gate and that's it for the entire 3.2 sq km park.
Best Time to Visit
April, May, September, October: 15-25C, comfortable for walking this enormous open-air park. Early morning (8-9:30am) is the best time -- soft light on the grass-covered foundations. Summer (June-August): 30-40C, very hot with almost no shade -- the park is mostly open grass. Go at 8am or after 5pm. Winter: park open but biting wind across the open space. Spring is surprisingly beautiful -- the western section has cherry blossoms (late March-early April). Hours: 8am-6pm (summer), 8:30am-5:30pm (winter). Danfeng Gate Museum hours same as park. The park is free to enter; the core archaeological zone and museum charge 60 CNY.
Tips for Foreign Travelers
MANAGE EXPECTATIONS: This is an archaeological park, not a standing palace. The Tang buildings are gone. You walk across grass-covered building foundations -- slightly raised earth platforms marking where halls once stood. The scale is the experience -- Daming Palace was 4.5 times larger than the Forbidden City. The reconstructed Danfeng Gate (south entrance, red, massive) houses a small museum with site models and Tang artifacts. The museum has English audio guides (40 CNY rental). The Hanyuan Hall foundations (the main audience hall, northern area) are the most impressive -- raised platform 15m high with views across the park. Rent a bike to cover the full site (2-3 hours walking, 1 hour cycling). After visiting: walk south through the old city to the Xi'an City Wall (20 min walk/10 min taxi) for the afternoon.
