Nanchan Temple

Same access as Foguang Temple -- both temples are on the same mountain road in Wutai County, 30 minutes apart by car. Fly into Taiyuan Wusu Airport (TYN). Hire private car+driver from Taiyuan (600-800 CNY/day). Drive 4h northeast. The road from Doucun to Nanchan branches off the main S310 onto a narrower village lane -- the last 500m is a steep paved path; park at the base and walk 10 min uphill to the temple gate. NO public transit. NO bus. Your driver must wait (there is nothing at the parking area -- no shops, no shelter).

Same as Foguang -- day-trip from Taiyuan is the standard approach. Doucun farmhouse (80-120 CNY, very basic, shared squat toilet, no shower in some rooms). The Doucun guesthouses serve simple dinner (20-30 CNY per person, home-cooked Shanxi noodles and stir-fry). If you stay overnight in Doucun, bring earplugs -- roosters start at 5am. In Taiyuan: Pullman Taiyuan (500 CNY, best overall); Hanting Hotel near Taiyuan Railway Station (160 CNY, clean budget). Tip: book a hotel near Taiyuan Railway Station or Wuyi Square for easy morning departure.

Doucun village has exactly 2 eateries: one noodle shop and one small grocery store selling bottled water and packaged snacks. The noodle shop serves dao xiao mian (15 CNY) and simple stir-fried vegetables with rice (20 CNY). Bring your own lunch from Taiyuan -- there are no restaurants at the temple itself. Taiyuan food streets to stock up: Liuxiang (柳巷) pedestrian street has bakeries, fruit vendors, and snack shops. Buy bottled water, fruit, and packaged bread/cakes in Taiyuan the night before. Local specialty to try: pingyao niu rou (平遥牛肉, Pingyao spiced beef -- available vacuum-packed in Taiyuan supermarkets as travel snack).

Same mountain valley as Foguang, identical climate. April, May, September, October: best months, 15-25C, dry and clear. The temple faces south and gets beautiful morning light (8-10am is the golden window for photos). June-August: hot but visitable; afternoon rain possible. Winter: Nov-Mar the road is often icy; temple may close without notice during heavy snow. Hours: 8:30am-5:30pm. Unlike Foguang, Nanchan gets almost no visitors -- you will likely have the entire temple to yourself regardless of season. The quiet is part of the experience.

Nanchan is modest -- a small three-bay hall, not a temple complex. Manage expectations. The magic is knowing you are standing inside the oldest wooden building in China (782 AD) when Charlemagne ruled Europe. The temple guardian (an elderly local man) may give an impromptu tour in heavy Shanxi dialect -- tip 20-30 CNY if he does. No English. No gift shop. No postcards. No card machines. Cash only -- bring small notes (10, 20 CNY). The guardian may not have change for 100 CNY notes. Photography: permitted outside, flash prohibited inside the hall. Combine with Foguang in one day -- they are 30 min apart. Driver: negotiate 800 CNY for the full-day mountain loop (Taiyuan-Foguang-Nanchan-Taiyuan) -- this is the standard rate.
